Lifestyle Choices Making You Look Bad

You’ve done everything all the so called beauty experts have advised to keep your skin clean, clear and youthful looking. You wash your face morning and night, apply toner in between and you go to great lengths to keep your skin moisturized from sunrise to sunset. Yet still you are no closer to the skin you want. 


In a word, lifestyle. That is to say that all the things you do in your life that are not directly related to skincare are not doing  your skin any favors. Lifestyle choices are as important as what is in your beauty cabinet and if you’re still light-years away from achieving your skincare goals, you should look to lifestyle for an answer. 

So which of these choices are you making that contribute to your skin problems? 


Besides the obvious health reasons for giving up smoking—lung cancer, emphysema and lung disease—there are also plenty of vanity related reasons.  

First there is the premature aging that many smokers face. When you smoke your blood vessels dilate which causes skin to lose its elasticity, which is why you’ll often see those pinched lines around the mouths of long time smokers. Smoking is a great way to deprive your skin of oxygen and nutrients, which can give you that pale, unbalanced skin tone. 

If you’re worried about your skin then you probably know a great deal about collagen production and how beneficial it is to keep skin young and healthy looking. Well the chemicals found in tobacco reduce, if not altogether destroy, collagen production which means, yep you will age before your time.  

Processed Foods 

I’m not the first and I won’t be the last person to jump on the whole, healthy foods bandwagon. But when it comes to skincare nothing can be more harmful than foods packed full of chemicals, dyes and preservatives. Those chemicals are responsible for dry, discolored and patchy skin.  

Think of all the healthy foods you could be eating—blueberries, spinach, kale, pineapples—and why you should be eating them. You want foods that are packed with nutrients that help the skin such as vitamins C and K, antioxidants that protect against sun damage. Processed foods are, for the most part, nutritionally deficient. 

If you want your skin to bounce back to it’s normal, glowing, supple look, remove the fast food, the junk food and add a fruit salad and fresh vegetables to your diet. 

Bye, Bye Glasses 

One of the first places where our skin starts to show signs of aging is around the eyes. Those age lines, or crow’s feet as we so affectionately refer to them, are directly related to the glasses you wear. Or don’t wear. 

If you’re too vain to wear glasses or sunglasses, and I know many of you are, then you shouldn’t be surprised when you start to see those lines surrounding your eyes. When you can’t see, because of poor vision or the sun, your eyes tend to squint. Often. The more you do that the more you contribute to the formation of wrinkles around the eyes. 

When you’re young that’s not such a big deal because the skin will bounce back. But the older you get, the less elasticity you have in your skin and the less likely it is the wrinkles will ‘bounce back’.  

Do yourself a favor, wear your glasses when you need them. Your skin will thank  you. 

Sweating The Small Stuff 

They say stress is a killer. It puts pressure on the heart, can contribute to high blood pressure and increases risk of stroke. But there are also flat out effects that directly impact your skin. Specifically stress can cause flare ups of acne, discoloration and even eczema. But stress also aids in the break down of collagen  which makes skin less plump and buoyant, and quite frankly, older. 

Life is stressful, there is no doubt. But stress does a ton of damage to the body, both inside and out. Find ways to handle your stress by using yoga or meditation or simply carving out an hour each day for yourself. The less stress you have in your life, the better your skin will look.
